CPD Guide: 1.5 (SL)

It is common for relationships and attractions to develop in the workplace regardless of the industry.

Anywhere there are humans grouped together, as we all are at work, there is a potential for relationships.

The impact of these relationships (for example Amber Harrison and Tim Worner) can be significant.

Nearly six out of 10 workers in the UK have been "intimate with a colleague on a regular basis", according to a survey by careers website, while an estimated one in four long-term relationships start at work.

A number of US companies require employees to sign "love contracts" to regulate office affairs, which bind couples to clear rules of engagement in the workplace - and more importantly, protects the company from any future legal fallout.

In stark contrast, most Australian employers are mortified at the prospect of having to discuss such intimate details, so it is an issue still largely ignored by companies - at their peril.

This interactive seminar will see the panellists discuss:

  • The legal framework which covers work-based relationships;
  • How employers and employees deal with relationships and what happens if relationships end;
  • Whether policies ought to cover work-based relationships;
  • Where the line is between consensual relationships and sexual harassment/exploitation; and
  • What the cases tell us what to do and what not to do.
